OUTERDISCIPLINARY
Round table at Department 21 with Ursula Biemann, Campbell Works, Alfredo Cramerotti, Iain Forsyth & Jane Pollard and Jon Wozencroft.
Join Campbell Works at Department 21 at the Royal College of Art for a round table discussion about roles, contexts, and [dis]placement in art, designand the world beyond. The discussion will explore issues of interdisciplinarity beyond the structure of educational institutions and in wider professional environments, with participants whose practices resist easy definition and often engage in issues and/or contexts outside of defined traditional sites or positions.
Questions being asked will include:
What are the relationships and boundaries between the worlds of art, design, education, the (mass) media and the music industry? As a creative professional, can you contribute meaningfully to more than one sphere? What is brought, or left behind, in the transition from one world to the next. How do various platforms affect the way audiences connect with your work? And do these definitions even still matter today?
Participants
Ursula Biemann is an artist, theorist and curator who has in recent
years produced a body of work on migration, mobility, technology and
gender. In video projects and several books she has focused on
migrant labour from smuggling on the Spanish-Moroccan border to
global migrant sex workers. Biemann researches at the Institute for
Theory of Art and Design Zurich, lectures at the CCC program of esba
Geneva, and teaches seminars and workshops internationally.

Campbell Works is the creative partnership of artists Neil Taylor &
Harriet Murray. Their studio practice extends to running an artist
led gallery space, initiating and curating art projects, and
undertaking a wide range of public realm interventions. By developing
the collaboration and curation of new ventures with artists working
across a wide spectrum of disciplines, Campbell Works acts as a
meeting point for ideas and aims to explore contextual relationships
between art, spaces and people. Campbell Works collaborate with
artists and organizations internationally, as well as with a diverse
range of professionals, commissioning bodies, the public, schools,
and local authorities in the UK.
Alfredo Cramerotti is a curator, writer and artist. He recently
published the book Aesthetic Journalism and is a curator at QUAD
centre of contemporary art, film and media in Derby. As part of CPS
(Chamber of Public Secrets) he is curating part of Manifesta 8 in
Spain this year. He is interested in the relationship between art,
journalism, the use of media platforms as art spaces, and overall
about the notion of reality and its representation.

Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard are artists perhaps best known for
their re-enactments of cultural and art historical events which
explore the mechanics of liveness, repetition, reception and
recollection. Many of their works relate to live and recorded music,
such as A Rock N Roll Suicide and File Under Sacred Music (both at
the ICA). Recent projects include Radio Mania: An Abandoned Work at
the BFI and a series of projects with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.
They have exhibited extensively in the UK and Internationally.
Jon Wozencroft has worked as a graphic designer, writer, editor,
programme maker and is the senior lecturer in Communication Art and
Design at the Royal College of Art. Jon is founder of the alternative
audio-visual publishing company Touch, which between 1982-6
concentrated on producing interactive, audiovisual magazines such as
Feature Mist and Travel, and has worked with a plethora of artists
such as; Neville Body, New Order, Simple Minds and Einsturzende
Neubauten.
